David Marpaung

        I am David Marpaung, from Indonesia. Studying in the International PhD program in Biomedical and Materials Science at Tunghai University has been an enriching experience. As a lecturer in the Department of Biosystems Engineering at Institut Teknologi Sumatera, Indonesia, I have always been passionate about advancing scientific research. At Tunghai, I have the privilege of working in Professor Min-Chieh Chuang’s lab, focusing on the development of DNA-based biosensors for biomolecule and disease detection. This research is particularly meaningful to me, as the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical need for early detection systems to prevent widespread outbreaks. I firmly believe that advancing biosensing platforms through synthetic biology will play a pivotal role in addressing infectious diseases and preparing for future pandemics.

       The International PhD program in Biomedical and Materials Science at Tunghai University stands out not only for its strong academic framework but also for its highly supportive environment. The faculty members are deeply committed to maintaining exceptional teaching standards while conducting impactful research. Throughout my journey, I have faced challenges, especially in experimental design and execution. However, the department’s interdisciplinary nature and the accessibility of experienced professors have been invaluable. Engaging in discussions, exchanging ideas, and receiving constructive feedback has significantly improved my problem-solving skills, enabling me to progress in my research and achieve meaningful outcomes.

       Upon graduation, I aim to leverage the knowledge and skills I have gained to enhance the academic environment in my home country. I aspire to integrate my research into teaching, inspiring and educating students in Indonesia to pursue innovative solutions in biosystems engineering. For those with a keen interest in biomedical and materials sciences, and a desire for hands-on experimentation, I wholeheartedly recommend this program. It is a transformative journey that equips you with both the expertise and the confidence to make a meaningful impact in your field.
